Chapter Fourteen

Two hours after the twins’ birth, Shira was alone in her room and still unable to venture out. After she’d washed off Ada’s blood, she put on her night shift and got into bed, sitting down slowly to avoid the creak of the springs beneath the mattress lest she wake the babies.

She was exhausted and cold. Though she should tend to the stained washbowl and her dripping apron, Shira had no energy left. Nothing was important at that moment, except the people she’d come to care for so deeply in such a short period. If anything had happened to the twins, Shira wouldn’t have been able to stay in London. She couldn’t bear the pain of such heartbreak while her own heart was so vulnerable. Yet the profuse elation when Alfred and Ada sat together with their newborn babies in their arms had done something else entirely to Shira’s heart. Gates long closed to unexplored emotions had come undone, leaving her confused and a little dazed.

Wendy had gone home to bathe and change, promising to return with all manner of things for the babies. While she was away, Nick, Felix, Alfie, and André arrived. Seth, Lucy, and Alfred’s parents were probably on their way. The clinic was full of people there to welcome the babies into the family. She heard their voices and took comfort in the fact that she wasn’t missed. All she needed now was a moment alone to gather her senses.

Across the hall in Phil’s room, Shira could hear that Ada was awake. Alfred doted on her and now, doted on their son and daughter. The air was thick with the gentle cooing of the twin miracles swaddled in soft, powder-scented blankets.

Though feather light, those voices rang like a thunderous symphony in Shira’s ears, each note etching itself onto her heart. She was truly happy for Alfred and Ada, but when she thought about the handsome surgeon she’d assisted to deliver her friends’ babies, Shira realized she had no prospects for a family of her own. She had a career now, but her prospects had vanished with her reputation.

So now she lay in bed and listened to Alfred’s voice filled with paternal love as he mumbled sweet endearments to his wife. Ada sang a soothing lullaby to the gently cooing babies. Fabric rustled. Probably the fluffing of pillows as the new parents settled in to rock their babies to sleep.

Shira imagined that the world outside ceased to exist. For Ada and Alfred, the center of humanity contracted into that single room. Two souls, perfect for one another, united and together, from the seed of their love, had created life. As the voices stilled, Shira realized the babies must have fallen asleep, but at the same time that her heart soared, her throat contracted and silent tears rolled down her cheeks.

That serene hush, the absence of the tension that had animated the emergency delivery, both soothed and stirred Shira so that she could not stop crying. All had gone well, but it might not have.
